What Is File Manager

The File Manager tool allows you to maintain and modify files and subdirectories. You can also enable/disable access to your files.

Entering the File Manager

  1. Click File Manager from the Utilities main navigation pane.
  2. A window will pop up and prompt you to enter a username and password. These are the same username and password that you use to access your Site Manager.
  3. The File Manager window will open.

Navigating the File Manager

(Figure 1: File Manager)

  1. Search for a Directory & Search for a File: This section of the File Manager allows you to search for a specific directory or file. Simply enter the directory or file name in the specified field and click the Search button.
  2. Create a Directory & Create a File: This section of the File Manager allows you to create a new directory or file. Simply enter the directory or file name you wish to create in the specified field and click the Create button.
  3. Execute a Command & Upload to this Directory: This section of the File Manager allows you to execute a command or upload to the current directory.

Using the Execute a Command feature can severely damage your account if you do not know what you are doing! Only use this feature if you know EXACTLY what you are doing or if prompted to do so by Technical Support.

  4. Current Directory: This section of the File Manager displays the current directory and file structure along with advanced information like permission and ownership settings. You can also view, edit, copy, move, rename, and delete directories and folders. This is also where you would navigate to other directories on your account.
  5. Key: This section of the File Manager will help you use the Current Directory section by defining what each icon is.

  1. Search for a Directory & Search for a File:
    • Enter the directory name or file name into the designated field.

  • Create a Directory & Create a File:
    • Enter the new directory name or file name that you would like to create into the designated field.
    • Click the Create button.
    • File Manager will then create the directory or file in the current directory you are in.

Key:

  • Folder: This icon designates a folder or directory. Clicking it will change the Current Directory listing to the folder you clicked.
  • File: This icon designates a file within the current directory or folder you are viewing. This same icon is used for all file types (including .html, .txt, .png, .jpg, .gif, .php, etc...).
  • View: This icon allows you to view the actual files within a directory or folder. Depending on what type of file you are trying to view will change the output. For instance, if you click the view icon for an image file, it will load the image, but if you click the view icon for an HTML file, it will list the actual HTML code, not the result of the code (Figure 5).

    (Figure 5: Example View Results)

  • Edit: This icon allows you to edit/modify the files in the directory or folder you are viewing. This option is only valid for editing text-based files, you can not edit the content of image files through the File Manager. If you click the edit icon for a text-based file, it will load the file into a large text box allowing you to make changes, then simply click the Save Changes button once you're finished to save the file (Figure 6).
