Domain Registration: A Step By Step Guide
You’re ready to start building your website. However, first you need a domain name. Read on to find out everything you need to know about registering a domain name including the terminology, processes, and what you should watch out for.
You’ve probably heard the advice to “register your domain name before you do anything else.” This adage came about because domain names are one-of-a-kind and in high demand. Not being able to obtain the domain name you need might lead to changes in many aspects of your website.
In this guide, we will cover everything you need to know about registering your domain name with WestHost. From searching for the perfect domain through to renewing it when the time comes, you can find all the information you need here.
Step #1. Searching for your domain.
Finding the domain you want to register is technically easy. However, making the decision can be difficult. Our easy domain search tool presents you with the available options similar to your search. You will also notice that if the .com version of your domain is taken, you can choose from a list of alternative web address endings like .biz or .us.
What if my domain name is taken?
If the domain name you are looking for is taken, you can choose a different domain or attempt to purchase the domain from the current owner. Check to see if there is an existing website on the domain. If so, the chances of being able to purchase are very slim. However, if there is a holding page or a contact page to buy the domain, then you might be in luck. You can also complete a WHOIS search to attempt to find out more information about the current domain holder. Take note that domains bought directly from an owner can be very expensive.
Step #2. Begin the checkout process.
Once you have selected the domain or domains you would like to register, simply add them to your shopping cart. You also have the option to add web hosting to support your website or choose a website building platforms like Website Builder and WordPress. Simply add the desired packages to your shopping cart and proceed to the next step.
Step #3. Determine the length of your registration.
During the checkout process, you will be asked how long you would like to register the domain for. Your options span from one year all the way through to ten. Note that the longer the duration of your registered domain, the cheaper your final cost will be. Depending on how long you see your website existing for, you can avoid the renewal hassle and register your domain for a long period of time.
Step #4. Finalizing your registration.
When you have determined how you will build the website to accompany your domain, you are ready to finalize your registration. Simply add the necessary personal information to the form. Please be sure that you include an email address that you use regularly. This is the method we will use to contact you about renewing your domain. Click the button to confirm your transaction, and you will become a proud domain holder.
Step #5. Renewing your domain.
When it comes time to renew your domain, you will receive an email with instructions on how to proceed. Renewing your domain is very simple from within your CHI account. First, log in with your username and password. Click on the domain tab from the left-hand side of your screen, then click the domain you wish to renew and follow the directions to confirm on your screen.
