Increase Outlook Timeout Settings For Synchronization Errors

By default, the Server Timeouts setting in Outlook is low (~1 minute). When the Server Timeouts value is too low, Outlook can behave erratically (sending duplicate messages, not receiving new mail, etc). This can be the result of a larger mailbox, or an extensive list of files and folders to synch with.

To increase the value of the Outlook Server Timeouts, follow these directions:

  1. In Outlook, open the settings for the account (by clicking Tools then Email Accounts OR in newer versions of Outlook through Home and then Account Settings)
  2. Once you've opened the settings for your email account, click the More Settings button.
  3. In the More Settings pop-up window click the Advanced tab. Increase the Server Timeouts value to 5+ minutes.
  4. Click the "OK" button then click "Next" or "Finish" to close the account settings window.

At this point, it is recommended to restart your computer to push through the settings.
