IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a protocol for accessing e-mail from your local server. It is also a protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you on your Virtual Private Server. You (or your e-mail client) can view just the heading and the sender of the letter and then decide whether to download the mail. All your mail stays on the server in multiple folders, some of which you have created. This enables you to connect to your mail server from any computer and see all your mail and mail folders. In general, IMAP is great if you have a dedicated connection to the Internet or you like to check your mail from various locations.

IMAP is a mail protocol available in addition to POP3 (Post Office Protocol) Mail, which is already supported by default on all WestHost accounts. With POP3, you have one mail folder on the server. When you open your mailbox, new e-mail is moved from your WestHost mail server and saved on your computer. If you want to be able to see your old e-mail messages, you have to go back to the computer where you last opened your mail, or configure your e-mail client (e.g. Outlook) to "Leave a copy of the messages on the server". With POP3 e-mail, you do not have to stay logged on to the Internet. Once your new e-mail has been downloaded to your computer you can log off to read it.

WestHost offers IMAP e-mail hosting for those clients that want it. Unlike POP3 protocol, IMAP is not installed by default, but can be added from within the Site Applications section of your control panel (Site Manager).
