Simple and Clean Menus with jQuery

jQueryCreating a nice-looking menu can be a challenge. You want something that’s clean, that looks good, and that fits into your site. These aren’t such demanding things to ask for in a menu, but if you search the Internet for “html menu”, you get all sorts of strange selections, varying in degrees of complexity, and usually designed for a specific site layout or color scheme.

What if you could have a very recognizable menu system – like the one that Windows Explorer™ uses, shown here?

NCAA Basketball Tournament

NCAA BasketballMarch madness is upon us yet again! The excitement and suspense among college basketball fans across the country is felt more deeply over the next few weeks than at any other point during the year. Our staff here at WestHost is cheering on our local Utah State University men’s team as they get set to start tournament play in Boise. The Aggies have a great team of hard working, blue-collar players who should compete with anyone.

As do hundreds of office groups around the country, many within our office like to participate in filling out tournament brackets. So far based on submitted brackets we have the following predictions for who will win the tournament:

  1. North Carolina – 31%
  2. Pittsburg – 22%
  3. Louisville – 13%
  4. Connecticut – 9%
  5. Purdue – 9%
  6. Utah State – 4%
  7. Texas A&M – 4%
  8. Duke – 4%
  9. Michigan – 4%

DISCLAIMER: We are not responsible or liable for any damages as a result of using our office statistics to complete personal brackets. We’re a bunch of computer guys who don’t always know the most about sports, but we do know about hosting!

UK2 Group Consolidates Support In-house

WestHost US-based supportThose of you who are familiar with WestHost know that we take great pride in our business model, especially as it relates to the personalized support we provide each of our clients. The service and support we offer is of such importance that we have always maintained the commitment to keeping that in-house. There have been times over the years where using an outsourced agency in another country would have provided some cost savings to our business. However, looking at the long-term affects of managing our support in-house, the benefits by far out weigh the costs.

This same philosophy of providing in-house support is shared by our parent company, UK2 Group. To read the recent press release about UK2’s in-house support, click here. Our experienced WestHost team is excited to assist with this consolidation by providing our in-house support to some of our partner brands. We are looking forward to the opportunity to work with new Web hosting clients from around the world!

More jQuery (BlockUI plug-in)

“The page at www.yoursite.com says…”

Does that look familiar? If you use alert() or confirm() from JavaScript in your web page, some browsers display a standard, boring window with that title, and your message in it.

A few weeks ago, I introduced jQuery, a powerful tool for writing dynamic and engaging websites quickly. Today I’d like to take a brief moment of your time to introduce BlockUI, a plug-in for jQuery. Beyond the power of jQuery itself, you can accomplish much using jQuery plug-ins. Many common tasks are taken care of and abstracted into easy to use, feature-rich plug-ins – a full list can be found at http://plugins.jquery.com/.
